Speyside Whisky

There is one thing that Moray Speyside has that stands above the rest. This is Moray Speyside, the heart of Single Malt Whisky – not just in Scotland but worldwide.

Incredibly, more than 50% of all the distilleries in Scotland are found here, with some of the most famous brands based in the region. The area’s rich supply of pure water and beautiful inland setting help to produce smooth and complex whiskies that provide an elegant contrast to the heavily peated whiskies that are produced by distilleries in other regions. Moray Speyside whiskies can often be identified by their sweet and fruity notes. However, hints of nuts and malt are also common, with some whiskies possessing a refined smokiness.

With a written history dating back to 1494 and Friar John Cor at Lindores Abbey in Fife, whisky has grown with Scotland itself to become one of the most desirable drinks in the world.

Cullen Skink

One of Moray Speyside’s most iconic dishes, Cullen Skink is a hearty soup rooted in location traditions made primarily from smoked haddock, potatoes, and onions.

Creamy and comforting, the soup originates from the beautiful coastal village of Cullen and dates from the early 1890s. Originally Cullen Skink referred to a soup made with the scrapings of beef from the front legs of cattle.

However, during difficult times in the 1890s cattle became hard to come by and was replaced with haddock, thus forming the Cullen Skink we know and love today. In fact, we love the dish so much there is even a Cullen Skink World Championship, which takes place every year in the village of its birth!

Shortbread

Shortbread, a beloved Scottish treat, holds a special connection to Moray Speyside.

Renowned for its rich flavour and crumbly texture, shortbread is a traditional delight consisting of 3 key ingredients: butter, sugar, and flour. In Moray Speyside, the art of crafting exceptional shortbread has been perfected over generations. We’re extremely proud that one of the most famous shortbread brands (and in our opinion the best!) in the world is from our region.

Exported across the globe, Moray Speyside is the home of Walkers Shortbread. Still based in the village of its birth, Aberlour, Walkers has been producing shortbread since 1898 and maintains close ties to the local community and its heritage. Moray Speyside is steeped in a rich seafood and fishing heritage, with its charming fishing villages standing as testaments to the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The communities living along the Moray Firth coastline have always had a close connection to the sea, with different generations from some families having fished the Moray Firth waters their entire lives.

To this day fishing remains a large part of life along Moray Speyside’s coast, with Buckie being one of the busiest fishing ports in Scotland.
