Speyside Whisky

There is one thing that Moray Speyside has that stands above the rest. This is Moray Speyside, the heart of Single Malt Whisky – not just in Scotland but worldwide.

Incredibly, more than 50% of all the distilleries in Scotland are found here, with some of the most famous brands based in the region. The area’s rich supply of pure water and beautiful inland setting help to produce smooth and complex whiskies that provide an elegant contrast to the heavily peated whiskies that are produced by distilleries in other regions. Moray Speyside whiskies can often be identified by their sweet and fruity notes. However, hints of nuts and malt are also common, with some whiskies possessing a refined smokiness.

With a written history dating back to 1494 and Friar John Cor at Lindores Abbey in Fife, whisky has grown with Scotland itself to become one of the most desirable drinks in the world.

Cullen Skink

One of Moray Speyside’s most iconic dishes, Cullen Skink is a hearty soup rooted in location traditions made primarily from smoked haddock, potatoes, and onions.

Creamy and comforting, the soup originates from the beautiful coastal village of Cullen and dates from the early 1890s. Originally Cullen Skink referred to a soup made with the scrapings of beef from the front legs of cattle.

However, during difficult times in the 1890s cattle became hard to come by and was replaced with haddock, thus forming the Cullen Skink we know and love today. In fact, we love the dish so much there is even a Cullen Skink World Championship, which takes place every year in the village of its birth!

Shortbread

Shortbread, a beloved Scottish treat, holds a special connection to Moray Speyside.

Renowned for its rich flavour and crumbly texture, shortbread is a traditional delight consisting of 3 key ingredients: butter, sugar, and flour. In Moray Speyside, the art of crafting exceptional shortbread has been perfected over generations. We’re extremely proud that one of the most famous shortbread brands (and in our opinion the best!) in the world is from our region.

Exported across the globe, Moray Speyside is the home of Walkers Shortbread. Still based in the village of its birth, Aberlour, Walkers has been producing shortbread since 1898 and maintains close ties to the local community and its heritage. You will find Walkers Shortbread in most shops and cafes throughout the region, and if you’re looking for a true shortbread haven, pop into one of their very own shortbread shops!

Seafood

Moray Speyside is steeped in a rich seafood and fishing heritage, with its charming fishing villages standing as testaments to the region’s deep connection to the sea.

The communities living along the Moray Firth coastline have always had a close connection to the sea, with different generations from some families having fished the Moray Firth waters their entire lives.

To this day fishing remains a large part of life along Moray Speyside’s coast, with Buckie being one of the busiest fishing ports in Scotland. As might be expected, the region is home to some fantastic seafood restaurants and cafes, who are proud to serve up freshly caught haddock, salmon, lobster (and more!) straight from the Moray Firth.

As you’ve discovered, Moray Speyside does alcoholic drinks very well and is no stranger to the world of spirits.

Similar to the explosion in popularity of craft beer, Gin has seen a surge in interest with Moray Speyside being the home of some wonderful Gin brands, with its distilleries having gained significant recognition. These include Eight Lands Gin, produced at Glenrinnes Distillery in the heart of Speyside (they also produce excellent Vodka!), Avva Scottish Gin, who are based in Elgin, Moray Speyside’s largest town, Red Door Gin, produced at Benromach Distillery in Forres, and Gordon Castle’s very own award-winning premium gin.

Craft Beer

The craft beer scene in Scotland has exploded over the last decade and Moray Speyside is now home to three great substantial craft breweries.

Perhaps the best known in the region is Spey Valley Brewery, who are based between the towns of Keith and Rothes in Speyside. The brewery takes advantage of the region’s pristine water sources, quality malts, and hops to produce exceptional brews that showcase both tradition and innovation.

Each beer tends to have its own unique taste, so why not visit the Spey Valley Brewery shop and pick up some for yourself, or indulge in some of Moray Speyside’s many craft beers at any of our great bars and restaurants.

For the best local breweries

High Quality Fresh Meat & Veg

Moray Speyside is a region renowned for its commitment to high-quality and fresh produce.

With its fertile soils and agricultural abundance, the area boasts a thriving agricultural sector that yields an abundance of fresh meat and vegetables. In fact, it’s even been estimated that Moray Speyside produces around a third of all food in Scotland!

The local restaurants and eateries in the region proudly source their ingredients from these local producers, resulting in mouth-watering dishes that showcase the incredible flavours and freshness of Moray Speyside’s bountiful land. From succulent beef to delicious pork, and the freshest vegetables, Moray Speyside will leave you craving for more.

Baxters of Speyside

Moray Speyside is not just the home to one famous soup, Cullen Skink, but also one of the best-known soup brands in the entire UK.

Baxters of Speyside holds a special place in the heart of Moray Speyside and has established itself as one of the UK’s finest and largest soup brands and producers.

Founded in the lovely village of Fochabers and with a history dating back to 1868, Baxters has deep roots in the region and has become synonymous with quality and flavour. From small beginnings producing jellies, jams, and canned fruits, Baxters now employs over 700 local workers in Fochabers and helps supply many of the shops, cafes, and restaurants in the region.

Ice Cream

Although we’re not necessarily known for our hot summer days, that doesn’t stop us from enjoying and producing some of the best ice cream you’ll taste.

With picturesque landscapes and abundant dairy farms, the region boasts a thriving ice cream culture that showcases the best of local ingredients. You’ll find many ice cream parlours and shops throughout Moray Speyside, especially in the coastal towns and villages.

Perhaps Moray Speyside’s best known ice cream brand is Miele’s of Lossie, who, as the name suggests, were originally formed in the lovely town of Lossiemouth. Their ice cream is sold far and wide outside of Moray Speyside and is a local favourite. Other great ice cream shops include Stew ‘n’ Drew’s in Hopeman, The Ice Cream Shop in Cullen and Fochabers Ice Cream Parlour in the peaceful village of Fochabers.
